Department of Missouri

Military Order of the Purple Heart

Commander’s Welcome Message

Welcome to Department of Missouri, Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH), web-site.  It is indeed a pleasure to be able to communicate with you via the internet.  I hope you find our web-site informative and user friendly.

Our mission is to foster an environment of goodwill and camaraderie among Combat Wounded Veterans, promote Patriotism, support necessary legislative initiatives, and most importantly, provide services to all veterans and their families.

Because all of our regular members are Combat Wounded Veterans, we understand the needs of all veterans and the unique needs resulting from the trauma of war.  Here in Missouri we have some of the best trained and dedicated National Service Officers (NSOs) in the country.  These dedicated men and women have the knowledge and expertise to assist veterans and their families with veteran benefit information and claim processing, available both through both federal and state governments.  These NSOs can be contacted by calling the St Louis office at: 314 552-9746 or the Mt Vernon office at: 417 466-4000 Ext 7.

In keeping with our stated mission, MOPH offers several programs to assist veterans, their families and the community in general.  Programs offered through MOPH are: National Service Program  (which our NSOs are a part of.);   Cell Phones for Soldiers  Military Order of the Purple Heart Scholarship Program ROTC/JROTC;  VAVS Program; and First Responder Program.  Information concerning these programs can be found on our National MOPH website at www.purpleheart.org.  I’m proud to say that our Purple Heart chapters throughout Missouri are not only active participants in the above programs, but strive to offer other programs and activities within their individual communities throughout the state.

One very important program we enjoy doing is being asked by various schools (elementary thru college) to come and speak to the students.  This is a unique way for our youth to speak directly with one or more veterans who actually lived through a period of history they are studying.  I encourage all school administrators and teachers throughout Missouri to contact me or any of our chapters to arrange for a speaker to come to their school.

Membership is important to any organization.  If you are a Combat Wounded veteran and have been awarded the Purple Heart medal by the United States Government, you are eligible for “regular membership”.  You may join any of the current Chapters, or be instrumental in forming a new chapter in your area – ask us how.  You may also qualify for membership as an “Associate Member”, if your mother or father was awarded the Purple Heart.  We would love to hear from you and welcome you into our Order.  Please refer to the “Chapter links” on this web-site to learn more about a chapter near you. If you would like to receive membership information, please get in touch with the Chapter Commander, Senior Vice-Commander or Adjutant in a chapter near you, and we will help you get your application under way.   Or, you may want to contact our National Headquarters to apply for membership directly by going to their web-site at www.purpleheart.org.

If you have questions about our organization, be it membership, programs or just curiosity; please by all means give us a call.  Myself, the Department and Chapter officers and members are all available to answer your questions or at least find out who can do so.

Thank you,

Everett L. Kelly

Commander
